Finding the Right Theme

This entry is a continuation of my previous post which talks about my approach to blogging. Although I am no expert, it is my hope to correctly document the approach I took so that others may learn from my mistakes and experiences. I do have experience with Blogger, however, my current blog is powered by WordPress and this guide will most likely be more beneficial to those who choose to have their blogs powered by WordPress.

Finding the right theme for your blog is not an easy task. From my own experience, it took me around 30 different styles before I settled on this current theme. The hardest part about choosing a theme is determining exactly what kind of “aura” you want around your posts. That is, at least, how I look at my situation in determining what is the most appropriate theme.

Before I go further, it is imperative that you note that I am in now way an expert on blogging or financially capitalizing with the Internet. However, what does qualify me to talk about this topic is the fact that I am starting from scratch and learning new things along the way. In that process, I want to be able to share my experiences because there are many of you who are in the same shoes as me and could possibly walk a similar path as mine. So give me a chance to talk to you about my own experience and it is my hope that you may find some of my words as a guiding light in helping you make the right choice for your blog.

Regardless of what I may suggest, you have to make the ultimate decision in terms of what theme will work for you. Currently, each theme is capable of handling a variety of tasks. This includes:

  • plugin support
  • fluid columns
  • 2 vs. 3 columns
  • and much more

Prior to selecting a theme, it would be important to determine what types of content you would like on your blog. It is also important to determine what you would like to write about on your blog. For example, I wanted a blog that was personal, yet talked about issues that were important to me. I have felt that blogging is an extension of my thoughts and as such, it caters to a wide variety of articles and opinions that I have formed covering a multitude of topics. In addition, I have no plans to monetize my blog to make a living off of it. In fact, I would prefer a solid reader base to having my paychecks come from my blog. Do not be mistake the fact that if I cannot financially support my blog without ads, I will not pursue that avenue. In fact, if I have to implement ads on my blog to ensure its survival, then I will strongly consider doing so.

Finally, it is imperative that you remember that some themes may not be perfect out of the box. My blog right now relies on the Misty theme. If you notice, I have made some changes to the colors and font size for this blog. Sometimes, you need to alter the appearances of your blog’s CSS file in order for it to work perfectly for you. I know that there are many people afraid to work with the nitty-gritty details of their site, however, if you want to really personalize it, you are going to have to work on the necessary files. This is where you may have to refer to forums and use your favorite search engine to help you out. I hope that this helps give you some insight into how to find a proper blog theme. You just have to realize that there is no perfect blog theme. However, if you like a certain theme, don’t be afraid to use it and try it out. Sometimes a few modifications will help make that theme perfect for you. Happy Blogging!
