Review The Air

In my on-going efforts to improve my blog and my writing abilities, I am pleased to announce that I too am joining the bandwagon and asking all of you to review my blog. As usual, there are some terms:

  • Your review must be a minimum of 250 words
  • You must link to this page: http://www.theagcompany.com/blog/2007/02/28/review-the-air/
  • You must link to the main page: http://www.theagcompany.com/blog/
  • You must be honest (write what you like/dislike about this blog)

Those are all my conditions. So what do you get in return? I will also review your blog and link to your blog as well. My blog is currently ranked 408,321 as of February 28, 2007. What this means is that my blog is in the top 20% of all the blogs registered on Technorati. If you are a new blogger, you will receive some exposure and your ranking will also improve. It will also help any blogger in improving their own blog and I think it will be fun. Please feel free to be honest. I’m not going to take your criticisms personally and I will do my best to improve my blog if I can. It is really helpful if you can be descriptive (i.e. with pictures) or explain throughly what you like and don’t like. Also try to include some suggestions.

Send a link to your review using the contact form and I will be sure to post a link to your review and review your blog.

Good luck and thank you in advance.

Why Do I Blog?

Jennifer over at Broke-Ass Student tagged me with the question: Why do I blog? So here’s my response:

In all honesty, I never really bothered to analyze why I blog because I never had to explain to anyone why. However, after starting this blog and reading countless others, I have come to realize that blogging is not simply just a gimmick on the web. In fact, I think John Chow’s blog really motivated me to be committed to this blog and force myself to consider it a commitment just like my own courses. I think the reason why I blog is to share my thoughts with others around the world. I blog because it helps me to clearly express my thoughts and gives me the opportunity to learn from my own thoughts and grow as a person.

The Air is a personal blog and as such I do not limit it to any particular niche. In fact, I write mostly about topics/issues that interest me. I know this may alienate some readers, but I think of my blog as MINE. Yes, I am selfish, but what’s the point if I simply cater to my readers and not to my own passions? If I’m not passionate about my blog or my writings, then I won’t write very well nor will I have any motivation to write in the first place. So I think it makes perfect sense for me to simply enjoy what I write about and hope that the readers enjoy reading what I write.

This blog has taught me a great deal of things. I feel that my writing has improved and that I am learning more about blogging in general. My main goal for this blog has always been to learn and be consistent. I am doing my best to improve my writing and learn at the same time. So far, I am pleased with the results and I honestly like to blog regularly and consistently.

So who do I tag? I think I will tag Zaib Kaleem as this will be the perfect opportunity for him to explain to his readers why he has started a blog.

Job Offer From Hamilton Sundstrand

Hamilton Sundstrand LogoYesterday, I mentioned how I had a phone interview with Hamilton Sundstrand and how I thought I did pretty bad on it. After the interview, I immediately fired off an email to the interviewer thanking her for talking to me and telling me more about the company. Since she spent almost 45 minutes with me, I felt that it was the least I could do to make her feel “better” about interviewing me. As it turns out, she attached that email and forwarded my resume along with it to her supervisor who immediately offered me a co-op position starting in August of 2007.

The position requires that I co-op with Hamilton Sundstrand for a minimum of three semesters. In essence, I would intern with them in fall 2007, summer 2008, and spring 2009 before they could offer me a full-time position. After I graduated, they would most likely offer me a position within the company with extensive bonuses and tuition reimbursement so that I could continue my educational career and obtain a Master’s of Science in Industrial Engineering.

If you recall, I am not exactly willing to accept this offer because it would prolong my undergraduate graduation date. I admit that my life has had its share of ups and downs and because of certain events, I feel that it is time for me to quickly complete my undergraduate degree and pursue my master’s before I get too old. Although I am not that old (23), I really want to get out and make my own money on my own two feet. For several years now, I have been relying on my parents for financial support and I really want to be able to support myself.

Jennifer Lynn, from broke-ass student, inquired whether or not I would have to relocate. The answer to that is no. The position is located in Rockford, IL and I live in Gurnee, IL. If you do a quick search on Google Maps, you will see that I am about 75 miles from their facility. I could drive every day and it would not really bother me since the company will reimburse me $500/month for travel and other “relocation” expenses. Jen also asked how relevant my degree might be if the company is already offering me a job indirectly. I’m not sure how much relevance they will place on my degree, but it certainly is required as a full-time position is contingent upon me graduating. The undergraduate degree will also offer me the chance to apply and work for another company in the future.

The way I am looking at this is not simply just to get a job. Rather, I really want to have the chance to work for experience. In addition, I don’t have any plans of staying put with any company in this area because I really want to move to Arizona or New Mexico. As such, I don’t want to be stuck working for a company in Illinois. However, I am not going to simply say no to Hamilton Sundstrand just yet. I really want to talk to my parents and see what they have to say. If they are willing to support this decision, then I may be willing to accept Hamilton’s offer. Besides, I only have one week to decide, so it would awesome if you guys could also share your thoughts and give me some advice on what I should do.

Tri-Issues

Issue #1

My web hosting provider, DreamHost, had a scheduled power outage yesterday. Unfortunately, since that time, they have been experiencing issues with their servers. For example, last night I was only able to receive emails but could not send any. After a while, I could not even check for new mail. This was quickly followed by my blog being inaccessible and inconsistent up-times. I don’t blame them for the problems, but I do wish they would take greater care of their systems in events such as these. As I have only been with them for two months, I am not thrilled by their service, but I am happy so far. If the problems do not recede over the next few days, I am sure my opinion might change. I am sure they are working hard to resolve the matter and their support system, in my experience, is quite amazing. The key thing here is that they keep their customers apprised of various issues.

Issue #2

I just had a phone interview with Hamilton Sundstrand, an aerospace company based in Rockford, IL. I don’t think the interview went too well since I did not bother to do any homework on the company or even prepare for the interview. Why? This company is only offering a co-op position, which means that I would alternate between working and attending classes every semester. As a senior, I only have two more semesters left in my undergraduate career and I really do not have the motivation to prolong my graduation date. However, I do find their company interesting and if I do a co-op with them, I am sure I will end up working for them as well. As far as I am concerned, I am not too particularly interested in a co-op position, however, if they offer a great package, then I may consider doing a co-op versus an internship.

Issue #3

I came across an interesting plugin that allows people to double-click on any word and it will automatically bring up a small pop-up window with the word’s definition. I thought it was pretty nifty and handy so I decided to go ahead and implement it in my blog. I would like to hear from you what you think of this plugin.

It is called AnswerTips and is available from Answers.com. Due to the CSS file in place right now, some of the formatting on the pop-up box may be a bit weird. Please note that this plugin does not work for Opera and Safari browsers. I usually do not like to vehemently support a side; however, I strongly advocate users to either use Internet Explorer 7.0+ or Mozilla Firefox 2.0+.

My Review of ZaibKaleem.com

John Chow has hit it big with his offer to have other bloggers review his blog. In exchange for their reviews, he will post a link to their review, possibly increasing the traffic to their site. If you think about it, it is a great way to gain some much needed exposure if your blog is new or struggling to find readers. The only requirement is that you simply have to have 200 words, have a link to John’s blog and to the instructions. Why? That way you are fully aware of the rules and keep John’s evil empire growing. Anyways, Zaib Kaleem used my contact form earlier and asked me to review his blog. I’m flattered he thought of me and I want to thank him by fulfilling his request.

The only requirements he set forth are:

  • minimum of 125 words
  • link to his blog
  • link to the original post about the review offer
  • send him a note using his contact form
  • only blogs deemed safe for work (SFW)

I’m pleased to say that I can easily meet all of his requirements. So let’s get started.

First Impressions

At first glance, it is apparent that Mr. Kaleem is using the popular Misty theme for WordPress. Although there is nothing wrong with the theme, I feel that by keeping the default colors, it reduces the personalization aspect of a blog’s philosophy. I find the computer generated image of the B-2 stealth fighter a real eye grabber. I guess that has to do mostly with my interest with the aircraft. I also noticed that this blog is very new and not even a month old. In addition, I noticed that there is at least one image per post on the front page. That is actually great because it creates a colorful aura around the blog and the contents it hosts. Right off the bat, I dislike the sidebar component dealing with popular tags:

kaleem_2.jpg

Although the intent is to show what the most popular tags being applied are, I think it distracts from the actual content too much. If it were located towards bottom of the sidebar it would appear normal and more fluid.

Content

I like the fact that the blog makes great use of images in each post. It really helps the reader develop a mental connection between the text and the actual product/service. Grammatically, the posts seem to be written quite well. This is one of the most important things I look for since I read a number of blogs that have poor grammar and poor speeling (pun intended). I also like the fact that at the end of each post is a row of icons where you can either add to your del.icio.us bookmarks or submit to digg. This is a handy feature should Mr. Kaleem ever write an interesting or noteworthy article.

kaleem_3.jpg

Most of the posts seem to relate to either technology or wireless things. That is no surprise since Mr. Kaleem is a professional in the field of wireless devices and has strong experience in the industry. He does a decent job of acclimating his readers to his history, but I wish that he would have a picture of himself on there as well. Again, his use of images in his post is extensive and something I highly recommend for every blogger out there. I know I don’t use too many images in my post, but that is an area I am trying to improve on.

Areas to Improve

I think the most important thing to do here is to really go and personalize the blog. Although the Misty theme colors are acceptable, I find the original theme color to be disdainful and really tiring. Besides, I think this is a great opportunity for Mr. Kaleem to integrate some new colors and layout designs to really showcase his personality. I feel that blogs are an extension of our mind and personality and it should be reflected as such. Mr. Kaleem draws his inspirations from John Chow, but I feel that Mr. Kaleem’s website does not offer “personality”, unlike John Chow’s. In addition, I think he should edit the footer so that it looks more fluid. In addition, what is that funky symbol in the middle of the footer doing?

kaleem_4.jpg

If I were Mr. Kaleem, I would also add buttons to advertise how users can add my blog to Technorati and maybe a more prominent RSS button so that users can find it much easier. Although there are RSS feed buttons near the upper left corner, one thing I find useful is to have prominent RSS buttons since users are more likely to click on it. In addition, using feedburner is not a bad idea either since it can tell you some useful information. One last thing I would change is to get rid of the “Continue Reading” page breaks found in many of the posts. Although this forces the user to click and view the post page, I think it is essentially annoying because I’d rather just scroll on one page than click on “continue reading” links. Besides, the recent posts sidebox module already shows the most recent posts on your front page so if I want to jump to a page, it can be done easily.

Conclusions

I think Mr. Kaleem’s blog is on the right track. It needs a bit of work in the aesthetic department so that it can seem more personalized towards Mr. Kaleem rather than a generic blog. Since this is Mr. Kaleem’s blog, I don’t want to sound that he should implement the changes I mentioned. Rather, I think it would be great if he would take it under consideration. What makes blogs like John Chow’s work is the fact that much time has been spent to understand what readers are looking for. I’m not sure what plugins Mr. Kaleem is using, but I recommend he search my blog or John Chow’s blog to get an idea of some really great plugins. The reason why I say this is because it will really help if the sidebar stayed constant throughout the entire site. When you go to a post page, the “archives” module magically jumps to the top. This is due to the way the theme is coded by the original author. That is why I highly recommend the widgets plugin. Mr. Kaleem’s blog is definitely interesting and I am going to be watching how it evolves over the next few weeks. I encourage him to continue personalizing his blog and learn more about how to reach out to your readers more.
