Another Scholarship Another Winner

Wow, this is probably the longest hiatus I have taken from my blog since starting it. I can attribute the problem directly to my busy schedule that has 18 credit hours of all upper-level engineering classes. Essentially, I am plagued with deadlines and meetings throughout the week and I simply am too exhausted to even sit down and write something.

I just learned that I won a $1000 academic scholarship for next school year in addition to my $1000 independent research scholarship. The USOAR scholarship, the official name for the independent research, required me to attend several meetings with the Vice Provost and deans of the university. Throughout the entire week, I was preparing and delivering ideas on my research proposal and accepting flowery words of congratulations from the administrators because they found my research to be one of the most profound topics.

The other academic scholarship I won is simply one that awards me $1000 every semester for one school year. In other words, my tuition for next fall will only be around $2500 plus books, housing, and other expenses. I just want to thank both Diego and Michelle for pushing me to apply for this scholarship and at times, holding me in a choke-hold till I filled it out.

Reasons Why You and I Are Not Rich

I found this great post that talks about 10 reasons why I’m not rich. Reflecting on some of the things the author wrote, I can completely agree. Without further adieu, here’s a rundown of the 10 reasons why I’m not rich:

  1. You Care What Your Neighbors Think
  2. You Aren’t Patient
  3. You Have Bad Habits
  4. You Have No Goals
  5. You Haven’t Prepared
  6. You Try To Make A Quick Buck
  7. You Rely On Others to Take Care of Your Money
  8. You Invest In Things You Don’t Understand
  9. You’re Financially Afraid
  10. You Ignore Your Finances

I think I am guilty of reasons 1, 3, 5, and 10. I know that I suffer from image problems and I constantly have a senseless urge to always think about what others will think. In my defense, however, I am starting to become more resilient towards those feelings and I am less worried about what others think than before. I have a bad habit of buying “toys” for myself at random points for, often, poor reasons. Generally, I am a lavish spender and I am cutting back on my expenses. Just in the past few months, I have constrained myself to only budget and essential purchases. I also spend quite a bit on alcohol for social events. By no means do I drink alone or anything, but I do drink considerably when I am out at the bars or clubs with my friends. Occasionally, I fail to prepare for unforeseen expenses and it keeps me from enjoying financial freedom. At times, I do wish I had a larger savings net to help ease the burden of expenses that I had not expected. And finally, I simply enjoy ignoring my finances. I think much of that stems from the fact that I am a college student and I really do not have a strong desire to engage in my own finances yet. Again, I would like to emphasize that I am constantly aware of my finances, but I simply choose to be inactive about them. Maybe I’ll learn one day.

Honors and a Word

After sifting through the mail over the weekend, I noticed an invitation for Phi Kappa Phi, which is an invitation-only honors fraternity. Unlike the classification, it is open to both males and females. I’m not sure whether I should be honored by this invitation, although it is quite honorable to be invited. I think the reason behind the lack of enthusiasms for this great opportunity lies in the fact that I simply refuse to allow the success that I have been enjoying to overcome me. My past is often filled with events that I am not at ease of still talking about, but I do feel that I have earned the success I am enjoying in many ways. However, to keep myself in check and not to become weak, I refuse to accept any of the current positive events as successes. Mainly, I view them as positive feedback that encourages me to continually improve my ways and be better than before. I think one day, I will turn around, smile, and take a deep breath. However, for now, I am simply moving forward and only focusing on progress and not the results yet.

Where the heck have I been?

I know that I am strong believer in posting daily on a blog if it is to be successful. Unfortunately, these past two weeks and the next few weeks are filled with dozens of deadlines and projects that simply need my sincerest attention. I am unable to simply sit down and crank out a post daily. However, I am doing my best to write in more detail and posts that are a bit more controversial since I feel my blog should go in that direction. I think one of my future posts will outline possible new directions for this blog and will explain the different categories found within this blog. In the meantime, I regret to say that my posting will be erratic, but I will do my best to adhere to my one-post-a-day policy. Maybe this is a great time for guest bloggers on my blog? If you are interested, please feel free to contact me and let me know.

Goodbye Ads

Many of you are already familiar with online advertising. You don’t need me to tell you that there are many bloggers out there who simply rely on advertising to run their blog and to sustain their lives. Examples of “high profile” bloggers include John Chow and Darren Rowse. Many of you are already familiar with the fact that John Chow regularly talks about his monthly revenue from advertising on his personal blog. I’m proud to proclaim that I have in no way helped him earn a single penny through advertising. Why am I proud of this?

I should not say that I am proud of not supporting John’s blog and that I have NOT helped him earn a single penny. Rather, there have been times when I have clicked on certain ads, however, for the most part, I definitely do not bother to even click or browse through the ads on his blog. Much of that is not because I am jealous of his revenue or that I “hate” him. Heck, I don’t even know the guy to say whether I like him or not. In fact, I find his blog to be extremely helpful and I am very thankful for much of the content on his blog. So why do I not support him? It’s nothing personal John, but I simply frown upon the principle of making money online through advertising because most bloggers fail to understand that it is content driving revenue, not advertising.

John does an excellent job of encouraging bloggers to post regularly and avoid common pitfalls when implementing advertising. In fact, he even mentioned in his blog about truly monetizing one’s blog. He also talked about those people who complain about advertising and those who use advertisement blocking software. Let’s face it; I am a strong advocate of blocking online advertising because it is annoying. Too many people, including John, do not adequately place the ads in a manner which does not detract from the content. Does it really matter to me what John has to say about online advertising? Yes and no. He has a great way of offering tips to improve a blog’s visibility on Google and other search engines due to SEO (search engine optimization) techniques. Along those lines, if one can improve their blog’s visibility then they can expect more visits and potentially more clicks on advertising. In a way, I am “stealing” John’s content without supporting him. Do I feel guilty? No because I don’t like online advertising. I think John should really emphasize the fact that all bloggers need to focus only on content before spending any significant amount of time on implementing advertising.

What about other blogs that use online advertising? I’ll be honest, there is only one blog that I visit using Internet Explorer with absolutely NO ad-blocking software. That blog belongs to Jennifer Lynn. What makes her blog really appealing to my eyes is the fact that she does not run banner advertising that feature images. It appears to me that most of her blog relies on Google AdSense and she has done an excellent job of positioning the text ads in a manner that does NOT detract from the content. To show her my appreciation, I occasionally click on the advertising found on her blog.

In essence, I am not against the use of online advertising. I understand that it helps to keep much of the content found online free. However, I do encourage everyone to abandon advertising if they are simply in it for the money. Blogs, such as 30Gigabytes, are simply horrendous and offer poor content. They focus too much on advertising and revenue and constantly and consistently overlook their content.

So what do I do? Primarily, I use and encourage everyone to use Mozilla Firefox along with the AdBlock Plus extension. To keep things fair, I always visit new blogs without blocking any ads to see how it looks. If I find it too annoying, then I simply turn on my ad-block software and I’m happy once again. If your blog uses advertising, that does not mean that I am no friend to your blog. Rather, I hope that you focus primarily on content rather than trying to make a buck or two.
