Critical Update for WordPress

wordpresstitle.jpg

I just noticed that there is another critical WordPress update that is now available. Like always, all Wordpress users are urged to update. I just updated my blog and as usual, the update went smoothly. Here’s a quick rundown of what the new update has:

WordPress 2.3.2 is an urgent security release that fixes a bug that can be used to expose your draft posts. 2.3.2 also suppresses some error messages that can give away information about your database table structure and limits and stops some information leaks in the XML-RPC and APP implementations. Get 2.3.2 now to protect your blog from these disclosures.

As a little bonus, 2.3.2 allows you to define a custom DB error page. Place your custom template at wp-content/db-error.php. If WP has a problem connecting to your database, this page will displayed rather than the default error message.

You can read more about the update here or download the update here.

Why I Stopped Reading John Chow’s Blog

To me, JohnChow.com is a fast growing blog about making money through an online blog. The best part about making money online is the prospect of never having to work in a traditional job ever again. Just take a look at John Chow’s November earnings; he brought in over $25,000. Who says that they would not mind earning that much money per month. Do the math: if John continues to earn approximately $25,000 a month for 12 months, he’s rolling in a smooth $300,000. And all that cash is just from his one blog about making money. You’d be stupid not to listen to him and try monetizing your blog. But I must digress because I stopped reading John Chow’s blog because of just that, his over monetization of what used to be a quality blog.

Stop With The Damn Reviews

One of the things that I started to hate about John’s blog are the thousands of ReviewMe reviews he does. To put it frankly, customers don’t order this review for John’s endorsement. Rather, they order the obnoxiously over-priced “reviews” for the traffic. If you think about it, it’s not that bad of a deal because for only $400 you can go ahead and experience a nice little boost in traffic for a few days. Of course, there are those who ordered those reviews for John’s endorsement, but it seems like John’s always supporting those who have new ideas on how to make money online.

Another problem with the ReviewMe reviews is that they are not all standardized in structure. Some have in-depth analysis while others just have a quick run-through and John’s two cents. John not only needs to be more selective about his reviews, but also needs to develop a standard approach in reviewing each site. That way, each and every customer can expect the same level of service from John. Shame on you John for not doing this from the beginning!

Why Do You Have Poor Content?

I understand that John’s blog has taken a turn and is now primarily focused on helping others make money. In fact, JohnChow.com is, in itself, a case study that documents how a blog can rise quickly and become a perennial cash cow. However, John’s blog doesn’t really help in the actual implementation of advertising or provide the technical knowledge one would need to have successful ads. From the looks of it, John just likes to write about companies and persons who are promoting online advertising in some form, but he fails to really help his readers.

Sure the companies that have developed the various technologies have exhaustive and well-documented wikis that can bring anyone up to speed. But the main question I have is why doesn’t John write about how bloggers can come up with great content. In order for any blogger to make money online, he/she must have great content. Isn’t that why thousands read his blog everyday because he has great content? I think people just read his blog because they think that their blog is going to become the next hottest thing in the blogosphere. Maybe it will maybe it won’t, but John needs to start teaching his readers how to find the right material and the right niche.

John is Evil

John has killed pandas and he hates the environment. Don’t believe me? Just take a look at his blog’s header image; it’s a Lamborghini Reventon. His endorsement of such a vehicle is bad for the environment. Hell, I bet that car doesn’t even get more than 15 miles per gallon on the highway. How sad is that? John, you should be slapped for promoting a vehicle that receives a similar mileage as the Hummer.

And that’s why I stopped reading JohnChow.com. For those of you who are dreaming of making it big through blogging, don’t quit your day job just yet. For those of you who are making it big through blogging, aren’t you special? And yes, my blog is ad-free and I promote anti-web advertising technology. Now I’m just as evil as John

I wrote this post as a joke and in no way am I suggesting that you stop reading JohnChow.com. I’ve never actually met the man, but what he is doing is definitely a great thing. So before you decide to write hate-mail, please be sure to include in your subject line: “I hate your post Nik!” Thanks.

Asshat Finally Decides To Apologize

I’ve kept a very quiet demeanor in terms of what Ashwin Khanna did on his blog a few months ago. I will NOT link to Ashwin’s blog as that would unfairly give him an undeserved linkback. This asshat hosted a contest that offered $2,500 to one lucky winner. For those of you who kept up, the winner was some blog that had only two posts and was newly created. It should be no surprise to you that it was Asshat Khanna’s own creation.

I happened to come across another post by Prince John that talked about the idiot Ashwin. So I decided to take a look at Ashwin’s blog and guess what. The kid changed his blog design, deleted his posts, and has offered an apology to the entire blogosphere. I think the fact is that the damage is done. Millions of bloggers around the world struggle to attract readers and move up in rankings across a multitude of search engines and blog indexing services. What Ashwin did was not only cruel but should also be considered cheating. If anything, I think his blog should just be banned completely.

However, I also think that forgiving one’s mistakes is a chance for harmony and gives the other person another opportunity to learn from their experiences. Am I going to read his blog regularly? The answer is no. Ever since I discovered his blog on Blogspot, none of his posts have been creative nor filled with quality content. All of his old posts were simply quick snippets of a variety of tech happenings.

Ashwin needs to learn and start writing original quality content. He shouldn’t simply be focused on monetizing his blog or running fake contests to get readers. Moreover, I hope he has learned from this experience and will regularly remind his readers that they too should not engage in deceptive practices.

So why am I writing this now? The answer is simple, Ashwin has redid his site and offered an apology. It’s only fair that I forgive him but also remind him that once you lose readers, you may lose them forever.

Bear With Me

Please bear with me as I continue to make some changes to this blog.

UPDATE

As you can see, I am updating this blog with a new theme and look. I have a few new posts that are ready to go and will be posted soon. I am going to try to post at least once a day as my new frequency. The only exceptions will be the weekends where I may only have one post. If I am on vacation and do not have access to a viable internet connection, then I may not post at all. Notices will be provided, of course.

Let There Be Internet

I finally have access to the internet and my blog. I cannot begin to tell you how hard it was for me these past several days to be away from email, instant messaging, and my blog. I know I have not been posting very often on this blog, but it has been some very busy days. I’ve also noticed that when I write just one post a day or so, I have far more viewers to that post. This, from my reasoning, is due to the fact that since my site does not have much traffic, it allows more readers more time to see that one particular post. Maybe this is a great time for me to switch tactics and only write once in a while.

I’ve started making inquiries for a new theme. I am also contemplating the idea of running a contest that will involve all you talented theme designers. You may be wondering why I am paying a significant amount of money for a theme on a blog that does not have much traffic. The honest answer is that I want my blog to look good as well as be home to quality writing. At the same time, I do not want to alienate anyone visiting my blog just because they are using browsers that are unable to render my site correctly. To ensure that I stay within limits, I am not willing to shell out an obnoxious amount of money. What do you think I should do? Should I approach a web designer or host a contest?
