Drinks Ahoy for New Year’s Eve

New Year Picture, courtesy of MSNBC

It’s that time of year again when everyone will be having a great time partying like its 1999. Many of us will be engaging our creative minds at parties and quenching our thirsts with over-priced and water-downed drinks. And there will be many of us drinking like there is no end. I do not think that there is anything wrong with that. However, before you go out this weekend, do make sure you read this article that talks about drinking wisely.

To summarize it all for you, some suggestions include:

  • do not drink on an empty stomach
  • eat some salty, fatty, or high carbohydrate foods
  • alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic drinks
  • know your own limits
  • learn to say no
  • drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids throughout the night and before you go to bed

From my own experience, drinking Gatorade prior to going to bed helps alleviate some of the more strenuous symptoms of a hangover. In addition, if I am having a hangover, I mostly drink Gatorade and fruit juices to replenish the lost nutrients. Remember, alcohol is a poison which can allegedly help you live longer when taken in moderation. However, too much of it and it could kill you. When you feel like puking, remember, it is your body’s way of saying that you have had too much of this poison and it is now trying to get rid of it. So don’t hold the vomit back, just let it all out.

Most of all, enjoy the night and drink responsibly. Happy New Year’s friends :)

Anheuser-Busch Offering New Kind of Beer

Those who suffer from wheat allergies no longer have to worry about consuming conventional beer. Anheuser-Busch, makers of Budweiser and Bud Light, have now begun offering Redbridge, a sorghum beer that caters to those who suffer from wheat allergies.

Almost 3 million Americans suffer from celiac disease. As of today, only small manufacturers brew beer that caters to those who suffer from wheat allergies. However, we can expect Miller and Coor’s to begin offering a beer that caters to them as well.

Drinking Can Prolong Your Life

Wine in Hand

In never-ending quest to prove that alcohol can help anyone’s life, came across this article that talks about potential results, from researchers, that indicate that moderate drinking can prolong your life. What exactly does that mean? It means that men can have up to four drinks per day and women can have up to two drinks per day. The research shows that both men and women can expect an 18% reduction for the risk of death. Before everyone starts partying, going beyond the stated levels will most likely increase the risk of death and you will most likely kill yourself quicker.

Here’s a quick reason why men can have more drinks than women:

The reason why men are protected at up to four drinks per day, while women lose the protection after two glasses has to do with how men and women metabolize alcohol, researchers say. It’s been shown that when men and women who drink the same amount of alcohol, women experience higher blood alcohol levels than men.

Fattening Cocktails

Being an avid consumer of alcoholic beverages, I am always thrilled to try different cocktails and drinks. Do not mistake my love of alcohol for alcohol abuse. I tend to drink only one night a week and I very rarely drink to get drunk. Some of my friends might disagree with me, however, I do not prefer being drunk since it removes my interest in the beverage. Rather, I prefer to enjoy my drink and have a great time.

What most people do not realize is that alcoholic beverages are not very friendly to those who are watching their diets carefully. Many cocktails have over 100 calories per glass. If you may recall, many times, none of us really only has one cocktail. In fact, most of us will have two to five glasses before calling it a night. If you do the math, you are consuming almost 500 calories in just one night while drinking.

This article points out 10 cocktails that you should avoid due to their high calorie count. However, I had a hard time finding 10 specific cocktails to avoid. I recommend that you do not use any mixer with sugar or high calorie count. That means, stay away from adding coke to your drink. In fact, stay away from pina coladas and long islands. Both of them have a bunch of liquids mixed together with high calories.

My preferred drink is always rum. Even then, I’m a huge fan of Bacardi Ciclon. Ciclon BottleI find this drink to be a perfect blend of gold rum, tequila, and a hint of lime. It really is a sensual drink and can be mixed with a variety of mixers. I tend to prefer mine with some orange juice with a thinly sliced lime floating on top. Try it out, I think you might actually like it.
