For the first time in over a decade, the Chicago Bears are headed to the NFC Championship Game and will host the New Orleans Saints. The road to this epic game has not been easy and the Bears continued to struggle throughout this game. The Bears defeated a formidable Seahawks team 27 - 24 in OT. As usual, Rex Grossman did not produce a stellar effort, but did facilitate Robbie Gould’s 49 yard game-winning field goal.
Grossman was 21 of 38 for 282 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Tommie Jones contributed two touchdowns and rushed 21 times for 66 yards. Robbie Gould was 3 for 3 in field goals and 2 for 2 in extra point attempts. Luckily, the players that needed to play well did play well. And for the forth time this season, the Bears defense struggled to contain Shawn Alexander. However, even with effective running, Hasselbeck felt the intense physical and mental pressure the Bears defense brought against him.
At halftime the Bears led the Seahawks 21 - 14 and had great positive momentum going in. However, the Seahawks instantly rebounded back after halftime and quickly tied the game. After taking a momentary 24 - 21 lead, the Bears responded with a field goal to tie the game. During the last 5 minutes of the 4th quarter, the Bears defense struggled as well as the Seahawks’ offense’s inability to convert on third and forth downs. As the game escalated to over-time, the Bears were able to stop the Seahawks at their 48. Needless to say, Grossman struggled to move the Bears forward, but just enough for Gould to kick his game-winning field goal and send the Bears to the NFC championship game.
Next week, the Saints will be visiting Chicago to vie for the NFC crown and a ticket to the Superbowl. In addition to rooting for the Bears this season, I also admire Drew Brees, as I have a special fondness for his skills. I’m conflicted as to who to root for, but my heart and soul is always with Chicago. So I’ll be rooting for the Bears and rooting for Drew Brees to remain healthy in the face of the demeaning onslaught brought by the Bears defense.
